LRO Teams With NRLN To Help Members Communicate With Government Leaders

The LRO is working with the National Retiree Legislative Network (NRLN) to strengthen the capability of Lucent retirees to communicate with government leaders in Washington, D.C.

The NRLN is a grassroots, non-partisan coalition of retiree organizations dedicated to protecting the pension plans and retirement benefits of its members. Based in Washington, D.C., NRLN represents nearly 2 million retirees from the Lucent Retirees Organization, CWA Retired Members Council, Association of US WEST Retirees,  Association of Prudential Retirees, Monsanto Retirees Association, Aetna Retirees Association, along with groups from Boeing, GE, GM, IBM, Johns Manville, AT&T, Portland Electric (Enron), Chrysler, Southern New England Telephone and others.

Two LRO members have leadership positions. Bill Kadereit is the president of the NRLN. Bob Martina, the LRO's Legislative Affairs Director, also serves as the NRLN's Vice President, Grassroots Network.  In their roles, they are working on a national legislative agenda which includes issues important to Lucent retirees.  As the NRLN attempts to influence legislation favorable to retirees, it is critical that LRO members join with other NRLN members in sending messages to the President and U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators.

The NRLN has an Internet-based system know as Capwiz to help its members email letters to government leaders.  The LRO has arranged for its members to have the benefit of Capwiz to facilitate sending messages to their state’s elected representatives in Washington.  When important legislative issues arise, the NRLN will send out Action Alerts through Capwiz to LRO Members. Your contact information is secure in the NRLN Capwiz data base.   

When a Capwiz “Action Alert” is issued, the LRO encourages members to personalize the "sample letter" and send it to their Congressman and Senators.  Capwiz is very easy to use. For example, it automatically selects your Congressman and Senators when you enter your Zip Code, then automatically emails them your personalized message with one click of a send button. 

The LRO believes that participating with the NRLN in the use of the Capwiz system important to facilitating communications with government leaders whose actions have major impact on the lives of retirees.
